PLANT DESCRIPTION

HABIT :  Herb.

HABIT :  A small, annual, herb with a crown of leaves on the top.

LEAVES :  Numerous, subsessile, distichous, very small, elliptic-oblong, obtuse, stipules lanceolate, acute.

FLOWERS :  Yellowish, small, axillary, the males 1-3, the female solitary. Sepals 4-6, stamens 3. Ovary 3-celled, styles 3, free, 2-lobed, disk present in both.

FRUITS :  Capsule globose.

FLOWERING AND FRUITING TIME :  July - September

MEDICINAL USES

Phyllanthus niruri helped reduce the size of these stones. They also found that it improved the removal of magnesium and potassium from the body through the urine.

Phyllanthus niruri appeared to reduce inflammation about as well as ibuprofen.

Phyllanthus niruri could reduce the size of ulcers.

Phyllanthus niruri has the potential to help in the treatment of diabetes. The researchers concluded that extracts of the plant could help lower fasting blood sugar and prevent blood sugar spikes.

Phyllanthus species on the herpes simplex virus in cell cultures. While Phyllanthus niruri was the least effective species, it did appear to combat the infection.
